Metro Atlanta Homebuyer Guide

How Much Income Do You Need to Buy a Home in Metro Atlanta?

You may have seen headlines saying buyers need an income of approximately $110,000 to afford a typical home in America.

That number does not tell you what you need to buy a home in Metro Atlanta.

The Metro Atlanta Difference

Your Homebuying Power Is Local and Personal

Metro Atlanta is a large housing market made up of very different counties, cities and price ranges. The income needed to purchase a home in Douglasville may be very different from the income needed in Alpharetta, Sandy Springs or another higher priced community.

Instead of focusing on one national salary figure, the better question is this: what price range gives me a monthly payment that I can comfortably afford?

Down Payment

You May Not Need Twenty Percent Down

Some Metro Atlanta buyers delay purchasing because they believe they must first save twenty percent of the purchase price. That is not always the case.

Depending on your qualifications, a Federal Housing Administration loan may allow a down payment as low as three and one half percent, and other programs such as conventional low down payment financing, Veterans Affairs financing for eligible buyers, and down payment assistance may offer additional paths toward homeownership.

See Your Own Numbers

Try This on My Home Search Page

Select a home from my home search page that catches your eye, then scroll down on that listing. You will see an estimated monthly payment along with details on how much cash you may need to close on that home.

This gives you a real, personal starting point, using an actual Metro Atlanta home rather than a national average.

The best home price is not simply the highest amount a lender says you qualify for. It is the price that gives you a payment that works comfortably with the rest of your financial life.

So, Do You Need to Earn One Hundred Ten Thousand Dollars?

Not necessarily. That figure is an estimate based on a typical United States home and national assumptions. It is not a minimum salary requirement for purchasing a home in Metro Atlanta.

The important number is the price and monthly payment that make sense for you.
